As promised, here are products and tips for securing and coyote-proofing backyards:

  1. The first essential step is to remove all attractants. Remove anything that may be attracting coyotes to your backyard (trash, unsecured compost, fallen fruit, bird feeders, dirty BBQ grills etc..). This will reduce coyote presence significantly.
  2. There are two ways coyotes may be entering yards: over and under. So there are two products I recommend for securing backyards:
  3. Dig Defense can be used at the bottom of fencelines to ensure coyotes cannot dig under.
  4. Coyote rollers can be installed on the top of fence lines and come in different sizes and varieties but Amazon has some of the cheapest prices.
  5. Motion-activated lights are also an effective deterrent for nighttime. These solar-powered lights can also be used as a deterrent.
  6. Lastly, creating a visual barrier between predators, pets and livestock in outdoor enclosures and yards is very effective. I suggest shade cloth with grommets you can find on Amazonoffered by many different suppliers in different sizes, colors and UV blocking abilities.

I also want to redirect folks to our Hazing Field Guide which provides effective ways to haze coyotes and reinforce their natural wariness of people to keep them at a safe distance.

In addition, please feel free to have any member of the UHills community reach out with any specific questions and concerns. We look forward to continuing to provide assistance and helping the UHills community foster coexistence with coyotes.
