ABOUT US
The Uhills HRB Sustainability Committee deals with all questions of policies and practices that lead to a more sustainable Uhills community. Specifically, the Sustainability Committee was established to:

- identify policies and best practices for an ecologically sustainable community.
- make recommendations to the HRB and subsequently to ICHA about the implementation of the best practices at the community level.
- organize community workshops & talks about various topics in order to educate residents to influence sustainable practices on the individual/household level.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Advocated for non-toxic, Integrated Pest Management in University Hills: Worked with ICHA on discontinuing the use of glyphosate in Uhills and supporting mechanical and organic methods of weed-control; supported HOOT regarding the implementation of owl boxes and less-/non-toxic ways of rat management
- Facilitated bringing affordable solar panels to Uhills residents by supporting the creation of “OC goes Solar” (then “Solarize Irvine”) Advocated and supported Zero-waste community events (infrastructure and logistics)
- Organized various talks and documentary screening events on Sustainability-related topics (e.g., eco-systems restoration, documentary screening about P22, composting)
- Advocated for electrical garden equipment both for common areas and for private gardeners
- Created the annual Repair Cafe that encourages residents to repair and mend items instead of disposing of them by offering volunteer-led repair services
- Educated Uhills residents on various topics such as sustainable transportation, recycling, composting, organic waste management, Zero waste, non-toxic pest management through emails, events, booths at community events
- In 2023, over $4,000 was donated to the UCI Basic Needs program from the Uhills CRV Recycling Program.
