The 2023 Homeowners’ Representative Board (HRB) election is now underway, through February 28, 2023. Voting is open to all University Hills homeowners. If you are a homeowner, you should have received an email on February 9 from Homeowners’ Representative Board. The email contains a link to the election ballot. The ballot includes information about the election, candidate statements, and the ballot. You may open the link as many times as you like until you submit your ballot. The voting key used is specific to your household, and may only be used once. It is being sent to primary and alternate email addresses associated with your street address in ICHA’s database of homeowners. If you are unable to use your code, it may be because another household member has already submitted a ballot for your household.

The University Hills Homeowners Representative Board (HRB) has seven members, who serve staggered terms. Four seats are currently up for election, and four candidates have volunteered to run for these seats. Candidate statements and additional information about the election can be found below. You may also view candidate statements by clicking the “information” link next to each candidate’s name on the ballot below. Each ballot includes four votes per household, since there are four seats to be filled. You may allocate all four to the same candidate, or distribute them among multiple candidates as desired. Election results will be based on total vote tallies. Be sure to click “Verify Your Selection,” and then click “Submit Ballot” on the confirmation page to have your vote recorded. Remember that your household’s unique voting code can only be used once. Thank you for voting.

CANDIDATE STATEMENTS:

Brad Conley
I volunteered for an open seat on HRB in 2015. Since then, residents have elected me to HRB. Here’s my original candidate statement from six years ago: https://uhills.org/news/2016-hrb-election/

I’ve been consistent. I advocate for transparency, objectivity, and fairness at HRB, ICHA, and on campus. I’m mindful of what’s best for children and families, giving voice to them at board meetings. And I still love University Hills. My principals and priorities are unchanged. But almost everything else is different. Especially our children: Kevin (17), Grace (15), and Brad (12) — now students at University High and Turtle Rock Elementary. (Time flies!)I care about what’s important to each one of you. If you choose to keep me on HRB, I’ll continue to advocate, respectfully and effectively, for you and your families. As University Hills and UCI continue to grow—and demand for housing continues to increase—strong advocacy on behalf of homeowners is more important than ever. On campus, I represent homeowners on the Campus Physical and Environmental Committee (CPEC). So that I’m informed about things that impact all of us, I attend relevant UC Regents (remote) meetings and keep up with UC system news.I work with ICHA (board & staff) on issues like transportation, dispute resolution, and new construction. My overarching goal is to “build community” in University Hills.I contribute to our community as a private citizen, too. I support victims of interpersonal violence by hosting a “healing from hidden abuse” book study group (remote since covid). I helped support health & wellness by presenting donation-based “Yoga of the Heart” at our community center (which we want to bring back). And I’ve supported children as a volunteer (Narwhals swimming), coach (AYSO soccer), education advocate (Montessori)—and dad who makes good quesadillas. While my focus has been on young families and children, I’m concerned about everyone in our community, especially those in retirement. When Bill Schmitendorf left the board in 2017, I told him that I’d continue to champion his “single issue.” From Bill’s 2016 statement: As a retired faculty member living in a large home (2800 sq. ft) as an empty nester with my wife Mary, we would like to downsize to a one story home. I believe there are many other older, retired faculty in the same situation. I also believe there are younger faculty with growing families who desire a larger home…” (You can read Bill’s complete statement at the link above.) We’ve made progress, but I think there’s more we can do…things that will be good for everyone (including UCI and ICHA). It’s been an honor to represent you. Thank you for considering me for re-election.

Greetings,

My name is Chrissy McCormick and I live in the Schubert Court Condos. It has been a sincere pleasure working with this community as a volunteer member on the University Hills Homeowner Representative Board (HRB). These past two years I feel we have really added alot in value in the Arts & Entertainment area, we have tried to bring the community together during Covid, but we have much more work to do. I would like to put my hat in the ring [again] for an open position on the HRB. I work off-campus as a geologist, and my UCI connection is my husband, Cyril, who works for the University in the Department of Earth System Science. Our son attends University High School. I am volunteering to serve on the HRB again because I have watched this community grow and change over the years and I want to make sure there are advocates on the Board that will continue to help its residents build a terrific community with a shared vision. It is clear from living here that we are a unique community with good intentions and lots of energy. I would be proud to serve on the board another two years, to be able to help direct your ideas toward common goals that work for all. Anyone that knows me, would likely tell you that I am kind and fair, and try to help persons or any animals in need. I love to have fun and I enjoy the idea of getting people together to celebrate life. Even in this trying time of Covid, I hope to continue to help us find a way to stay positive and knowledgeable as we move forward out of this pandemic. Let me know if there is anything else you need from me. You know what I need from you – your VOTE!  Thanks in advance, Chrissy McCormick

Good day to you,

I am writing to express my interest in continuing my community engagement as a member of the HRB in University Hills. As a former board member, I have advocated for and supported the interest of this community for several years. Over the course of my living here I have and will continue to be an advocate for building community and holding leadership accountable for the direction it is intending to go. A couple of the projects that I’ve been a part of include the 1st ever Mural Project celebrating Black Lives Matter; the Drop Box library where there is a shared book exchange. There are many ideas and opportunities that can continue to make this University community a place that visibly shows it cares about its residents. I suggested in the past and will continue to make it a

community platform that if we are serious about building community, then all members of the community should have voice in the decisions and management of issues affecting every aspect of this wonderful benefit that is University Hills. I have always been of the mindset that if you aren’t actively engaged in the management of your community, then you really can’t complain when you don’t like something. As a 24+ year staff member at UCI and an alumnus, from the 70’s, I have seen this University and the UniHills community continue to grow and develop into a space and place that significantly contributes to

the welfare of its faculty, staff, and students. As good as we are, I believe we can still get better. I am committed to doing what I can to make that happen. I believe my passion for this community, my experience and skill set will continue to add value to an already robust group.

If you have any questions, or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me. My contact information is 1209 Cervantes Ct. However, the best way to reach me is via my mobile number, (949) 683-3130, or email at gparham@uci.edu.

Thank you for your consideration.

I am volunteering my candidacy to renew my position on the HRB.

As a twenty year resident of University Hills, and a nine year member of the HRB, (five of these as HRB Chair or Co-Chair), I have been fortunate to witness much of our growth and development. This growth encompasses not only the new homes and facilities springing up like topsy; it especially, in my view, manifests itself in the variety of events, engaged communication, and social gatherings that enable us to become a community, a place attractive to new members of the UCI family and a place where current residents want to remain, and not just a subdivision.

My specific interests lie in building on this foundation of community.

* I brought a vision of engagement, with ICHA’s help. through the revamping of our community website.

* During the pandemic, I participated in organizing various Zoom meetings-

to provide information on public health,

to enable us to communally celebrate holidays in socially distanced ways,

and to engage us in discussions on social justice issues.

* I have been a liaison between our community and the UCI Public Safety Advisory Committee

* I plan to further foster community members’ efforts by providing support to the many volunteer committees that mark our ongoing commitments to the extension of sustainability and social development.

*In addition in the coming months, we seek to address the challenges of aging in place in University Hills.

We are blessed with perhaps the most diverse neighborhood in the county. The cultural and intellectual variety of our residents, and even the wide range of ages represented here provide us with an opportunity to be someplace very special indeed. Therefore on HRB, my chief goal would be to review all of our recommendations and actions through the lens of how they could bring us together in a web of understanding and amity.
